When Tabernakel was released
When Tabernakel was released at the beginning of 1974, the US president was Gerald Ford who had taken over from the impeached Richard Nixon (both Republicans). The UK Prime Minister was Harold Wilson (Labour) who had defeated Edward Heath (Conservative) in the elections. In Holland Queen Juliana was still on the throne and Joop den Uyl was prime minister. Pope Paul VI was leader of the Roman Catholic church.
Famous people born in 1974 include Penelope Cruz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robbie Williams and Jewel Kircher. At that time people in the US were listening to The way were by Barbra Streisand. In the UK Tiger Feet by Mud was the top song. In Holland it was Rock your baby by George McCrae.
Blazing Saddles, a comedy western, was one of the biggest grossing movies released in 1974, while Watership Down by Richard Adams was one of the best selling books.

Akkerman back in the UK
It was my joy to be down in Sussex on March 11 at Trading Boundaries to catch the first of three exclusive concerts by Jan Akkerman and his band - the first time in a while. The concert was in two halves and was more jazzy for the first half (a nice section Crackers to Angel Watch) and more rocky for the second (though Focus 2 and Anonymous are unique). The bass player has broken his leg and so had to sit and Jan didn't seem quite happy with his two Gibson guitars for some of the time. I got a little lost on Tommy's Anniversary but otherwise it was a great concert. Nice to meet Jan and Mrs Akkerman, looking after the merchandise. Jan seemed tired at the end of a long day. He is 75, of course.

David Gahr
David Gahr (1922-2008) took the pictures of Gene Paul and Geffrey Haslam. He was an American photographer, born in Milwaukee to Russian immigrant parents. He studied economics at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and served in the infantry in Europe in World War II. He was one of "the pre-eminent photographers of American folk, blues, jazz and rock musicians of the 1960s and beyond."
His photographic output includes more than five decades of musicians such as Phil Spector, Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison, Janis Joplin, Sonny Terry, John Lennon and Pete Seeger. His book, The Face of Folk Music (Citadel Press, 1968) with writer Robert Shelton captured the exploding American Folk music scene, with hundreds of images including Dylan, Seeger, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Tom Paxton, Phil Ochs, Odetta, Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, Mary Travers and Johnny Cash, among others. His work appeared prominently in Crawdaddy.
Dozens of Wikipedia pages include references to Gahr's photographs, such as those of Doc Watson, Stevie Ray Vaughan, etc.
Gahr died in Brooklyn, leaving a son and a daughter, Carla Gahr (also a NYC-based photographer, who, with her father, managed the David Gahr photography studio and archives).

Electric Lady
I saw an interview with Jan saying that some of Tabernakel was recorded in Electric Lady Studios, the New York Studio built originally for Jimi Hendrix.

Timings
The shortest track on the 10 track album Tabernakel is the second track Coranto for Mrs Murcott (1:26") and the longest, the final suite, Lammy (14' 06").
The other solo lute tracks range from between 1' 31" and 3' 17" in length with House of the King at 2' 23", Javeh at 3' 22" and Britannia at 3' 55".
The original first side lasted 20' 26" and the second side a shorter 17' 23". That is a total length of 37' 49" and so it takes about 40 minutes to listen to. Originally LPs could only comfortably manage 23 minutes a side maximum. The album is fairly typical in terms of length then.
